Joachim Low will be able to welcome back several familiar faces after naming a much-changed side for their recent friendly loss to Argentina. Philipp Lahm returns, but will play at right-back as opposed to left-back, with Marcel Schmelzer keeping his place on the left-hand side of defence and Jerome Boateng dropping to the bench.

Manuel Neuer will certainly come in for Ron-Robert Zieler in goal, while Lukas Podolski is likely to reclaim his spot on the left wing, but another returning player, Per Mertesacker, will find his path to a centre-back berth blocked by Holger Badstuber and Mats Hummels, whose partnership continues to blossom.

However, there is no return for the unfit Bastian Schweinsteiger, leaving Toni Kroos to continue alongside Sami Khedira in the deep-lying midfield positions, while Miroslav Klose will retain his place up front in light of Mario Gomez's ankle injury.

Faroe Islands, meanwhile, are expected to make a couple of changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Nordic rivals Iceland in a friendly in August. Ageing goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen should make way for the younger Gunnar Nielsen.

Right-back Jonas Tor Naes and centre-backs Rogvi Baldvinsson and Odmar Faero should fill in at centre-back, but Lars Olsen has to make a choice between Erling Jacobsen and Pol Johannus Justinussen for the berth on the left side of defence.

Captain Frodi Benjaminsen and Hallur Hansson will form a shield in front of the defence, with Simun Samuelsen, Christian Holst and Daniel Udsen playing behind Joan Simun Edmundsson, with Hjalgrim Elttor confined to a place on the bench.

The road to the 2014 FIFA World Cup opens for Europe's teams on Friday, with many sides preparing for double-headers and defending champions Spain beginning their defence in Georgia.
Vicente del Bosque's men followed up their 2010 World Cup triumph by claiming UEFA EURO 2012 this summer to win an unprecedented third consecutive major tournament. Now intent on clinching their fourth, they will get the ball rolling in Group I in Tbilisi on Tuesday 11 September – after tackling Saudi Arabia in a friendly in Pontevedra four days earlier.
Del Bosque has recalled David Villa to his squad after the FC Barcelona striker – and the Roja's all-time leading scorer – was unable to travel to Poland and Ukraine during his recovery from a broken leg. "It is unusual that Villa is coming," explained the coach. "He has hardly played, but we thought it would give him a lift. All the information we have is that he is well." Centre-back Carles Puyol misses out with a fractured cheekbone, however.
